Saint Louis Athletica, a founding member of Women’s Professional Soccer  (WPS), will serve as Honorary Co-Chairs of the 12th Annual Susan G. Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure to be held Saturday, June 12 in downtown St. Louis.  Wells Fargo Advisors returns as the local presenting sponsor of the largest Race for the Cure in the world.

The young and talented soccer club located right here in St. Louis got underway last year with its inaugural season.  In 2009, Athletica finished in second place in the WPS, and reached the WPS Super Semifinal. Saint Louis Athletica plays their home matches at The Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park in suburban St. Louis.

Race Day Details
The day’s events start with on-site registration beginning at 6:30 a.m.  The Annual Survivor Procession takes place at 7:25 a.m. – where over 4,500 breast cancer survivors proceed from 13th Street to the main stage before a photo is taken and a special celebration is had.  The Race, presented by Wells Fargo Advisors, will begin at8:30 a.m. with the wheelchairs.  5K timed runners start at 8:35 a.m. and the 5K untimed runners start at 8:40 a.m.  The 5K walkers start at 9 a.m. and the one-mile fun walk starts at 9:15 a.m.  This year's start line is at 14th and Olive.

The Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure hit the ground running in 1999 – the first St. Louis Race immediately earned the distinction of being the largest road race ever held in the city. The 10,257 St. Louis Race participants set and still hold a Komen record as the largest first-year event of any Race around the globe.

Today, the St. Louis Race is the largest of its kind in the world.  In 2009, 66,470 people gathered downtown St. Louis for the event, and historically, more than 60,000 people have turned out for the Race each of the past five years and more than $18 million has been raised to help find the cures for breast cancer.  Seventy-five percent of that money has stayed in the St. Louis community to fund screening, treatment, education and research programs while the remaining 25% has funded the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Grants Program for cutting-edge research.
